Who We Are

Reliable transportation shouldn’t be a luxury.

SHIFT Garage is a faith-driven nonprofit auto ministry serving Sioux Falls and Rapid City, South Dakota. We exist to restore dignity and provide reliable transportation to people who can’t afford the high cost of car repair.

Because when your car breaks down, it’s rarely “just a car.”

It’s your way to work. Your kids’ school pickup. Your next paycheck. Your ability to show up for life.

What we do

SHIFT Garage helps people move from stuck to stable through two primary paths:

1) Affordable car repair (clients pay for parts — we donate the labor)

We provide free labor on qualified repairs so families can get back on the road without a crushing bill. You’ll get a clear plan, honest communication, and repairs focused on safety and reliability first.

2) Donated vehicles and affordable vehicle options

When repair isn’t the best option—or when someone needs a fresh start—we help provide donated vehicles or affordable used vehicles to people who need dependable transportation.

How SHIFT Garage got started

SHIFT Garage began with a simple burden: Joe kept meeting people who were working hard, doing their best, and still getting knocked down by one unexpected repair. Not because they were careless—because they were already stretched thin.

He saw the pattern over and over: a breakdown leads to missed work, missed pay, missed appointments… and the stress snowballs fast. Joe believed there had to be a different kind of shop—one built on honesty, dignity, and community, where people could receive real help without shame.

So he started gathering people who wanted to serve—mechanics, churches, and community members—and SHIFT Garage was born: a place where faith shows up in practical love, and where reliable transportation becomes a pathway back to stability.

More than repairs

Transportation is often the first domino. When it falls, everything gets harder.

That’s why SHIFT Garage also creates opportunities for:

  • Volunteer mechanics and helpers who want to serve with their hands

  • Churches and community partners who want to restore hope in practical ways

  • Teaching practical life and car-care skills so people can stay ahead of the next breakdown

At the heart of it all is transformation: broken cars and struggling people become restored, mobile, and filled with new hope.

What makes us different

You’ll feel it here:

  • Dignity-first care (no shame, no pity, no judgment)

  • Clear communication (plain language, honest expectations)

  • Community-powered help (volunteers and partners making repairs possible)

  • Focused on stability (not upsells—safe, reliable transportation)
